The Earth Mansion

“Let’s run away,” Chad said to Ian as soon as they were left alone in their jail cell at the lower level of the Earth Mansion. There was a small window above their head. Chad jumped and clasped his fingers on the stone window sill and pulled himself up. The opening looked down to the bay where they had embarked. The Big Eye Fish was right down there.

“How?” Ian was pacing around, looking at the various markings on the wall of their cell. There were words and arts of all ages, from all corners of the world. He wondered who else had been taken captive here before them and what their stories were.

“We take the ship and drive it home.” Chad was talking about the Big Eye Fish.

“But how? Can you drive that thing?”

“We’ll figure it out,” Chad replied. “If not, we can always kidnap the captain with us.”

“Aren’t we going back with the group within four days’ time anyway?!” Ian felt that Chad was again taking on more than he could chew. “I would hate to find out what happens if we get caught.”

“Dude, do you think they would let us go back to our homes as if nothing happens once they figure out what was the information in the girl’s diary that the bandit wants? — The magistrate said he can’t find records of our demises in the Hong Kong Book of Life and Dead! That book contains every piece of past, present and future information about everyone in Hong Kong. Do you know what that means?”

“What?”

“It means we’re probably killed outside of Hong Kong! We are never going to go back to our homes and will never live our normal lives again, that’s what it says. We’re going to be killed, or worse yet, be thrown into one of the eighteen Hells in here. That’s why there is no record of us. We must run away!”

Ian turned to look at Chad. He did seem to have a point.

“But we can’t just leave everyone here stranded without a ship. Not especially with the other prisoners who saved us behind in Feng Du,” he said.

“You’re not thinking about the twins nor the arsonist,” Chad gave him a knowing look. “You’re thinking about the girl, Elise, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” Ian admitted. “She’s one of the people I do not want to leave behind here.”

“You have to let her go. She’s dead!” Chad said. “Besides, she shared a suite with that guy Michael. She’s never going to be able to get away from him.”

“We take her with us, or we stay here!” Ian slumped to the ground in anguish.
